A rich man had a dog to guard his house at night. In the daytime, the dog was tied with a chain to a heavy stone and was free at night. Everyday a bird came and saw the dog and the two became friends. The bird would play with the dog and also tease him. But the dog did not mind this at all. When the dog got his food everyday, the bird would come near and catch a piece of food. She held it up in her beak and was out of his reach just to tease him. But the dog did not get angry, because he was glad to have someone to play with. One day the bird fell into a tub full of water, not very far away. The dog saw this and dragged the heavy stone near enough to reach the tub. He took the bird out and put her down on the ground. The bird lay still for a while and then got up.

Ans. Trees are very important for human life and the environment. There are different types of trees such as fruit trees, medicinal trees and forest trees. They provide us fruits, wood, medicines, oxygen and shade. Trees help in reducing pollution and maintaining ecological balance. They prevent soil erosion and help in rainfall. Trees also improve human health by giving fresh air and a peaceful environment. Without trees, life on earth would not be possible. Therefore, we should protect trees and plant more trees to save our future.

It was the birthday party of my younger sister, who completed ten years of age. Everyone in the family was very excited to celebrate her special day.
ii) Time and place:
The party was organised last Sunday at 6:00 p.m. at our residence. All the arrangements were made in advance to welcome the guests properly.
iii) Description:
Our house was beautifully decorated with colourful balloons, flowers, ribbons and electric lights. A separate table was arranged for the birthday cake, candles and gifts. The drawing room was cleaned and decorated nicely. Many friends, neighbours and close relatives were invited. Everyone was dressed in beautiful clothes and the atmosphere was very pleasant.
iv) Celebration:
When all the guests arrived, my sister cut the cake and we sang birthday songs together. After that, games and music added fun to the party. Delicious food, sweets, snacks and cold drinks were served to all the guests. Children enjoyed a lot and elders blessed my sister.
v) Your impression:
The birthday party was joyful, well organised and full of happiness. I enjoyed every moment of it. It was a memorable day that I will always remember with pleasure.

a) How did Gautam Buddha convince Kisa Gautami that death is unavoidable ?
Ans. Kisa Gautami had lost her only son and was deeply saddened. Gautam Buddha asked her to bring a handful of mustard seeds from a house where no one had ever died. She went from door to door but could not find such a house. Then she realised that death is common to all and unavoidable. This helped her overcome her sorrow.
b) What were the difficulties faced by Nelson Mandela in achieving freedom for his people?
Ans. Nelson Mandela faced many difficulties in his struggle against apartheid. He suffered racial discrimination and injustice. He was imprisoned for many years and lived away from his family. Despite hardships, sacrifices and suffering, he continued his fight peacefully to achieve freedom and equality for his people.
7. Why does the poet hold with those who favour fire ?
Ans. The poet holds with those who favour fire because fire symbolises human desires such as greed, passion and hatred. He feels that these desires are powerful enough to destroy the world. Therefore, he agrees that fire can be the cause of the world’s end.

b) Describe the role of Bholi’s teacher in her life.
Ans. Bholi’s teacher played a very important role in shaping her life. She encouraged Bholi to speak, learn, and gain confidence. She helped her overcome her shyness and lack of self-esteem. The teacher guided Bholi to become independent, confident, and self-respecting, preparing her for a better future.
