(Reading)

1. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow :

Just as it is vital for parents to live their own lives as fully as possible and to deepen their understanding to themselves to the utmost, so it is important for teachers and educators to do the same. When children go to school their teachers become, during school hours, substitutes for their parents. The children transfer to the teacher some of the feelings they have for their parents and are influenced in their turn by the personalities of the teachers. This mutual relationship is of more importance than any teaching method, and a child’s ability to learn is continually hampered if the relationship is unsatisfactory. Again, if teachers really want to be educators, to help children to develop into satisfactory men and women, and not simply to stuff them with knowledge, they will only be really successful if they themselves have sound personalities. No amount of preaching, however well done, no principles however sound, no clever technique of mechanical aids can replace the influence of a well developed personality.

a) What is important for teachers and educators ?
Ans.
It is important for teachers and educators to live their lives fully and to develop a deep understanding of themselves and sound personalities.

b) What happens if the relationship between a teacher and a child is unsatisfactory?

2. Write a letter to your younger sister telling her the disadvantages of watching television excessively.
Ans.

Dear Sister,

I hope you are fine and doing well in your studies. I am writing this letter to tell you about the disadvantages of watching television excessively.

Watching too much television wastes a lot of valuable time which can be used for studies, reading books or playing games. It also affects our eyesight and causes headaches and lack of concentration. Excessive TV watching makes us lazy and weak because we do not take part in physical activities. It also reduces creative thinking and negatively affects our academic performance.

Therefore, you should watch television only for a limited time and focus more on your studies, outdoor games and good habits. This will help you stay healthy and achieve success in life.

I beg to state that I am a student of your hostel. At present, there are very limited facilities for indoor games in the hostel. Due to lack of such facilities, students are unable to utilize their free time in a healthy and useful manner.

Indoor games like chess, carrom, table tennis and ludo are very helpful for mental refreshment and personality development. These games keep students active, reduce stress and promote friendly interaction among students, especially during bad weather or evening hours.

Therefore, I kindly request you to provide facilities for some indoor games in the hostel at the earliest. I shall be highly thankful to you for this act of kindness.
